Teenage life coaching helps teens to be resilient, confident and self-supporting. It gives skills they will carry on into their adult life.
I love working as a Life Coach to Teenagers. Teenage years can be tricky and full of emotion and confusion. Teenagers can be overcome with worry, anxiety and self-doubt. They often do not want to talk to a parent about how they are feeling and many don’t want counselling or therapy. This is where I can help.
I am not a therapist, but I am an experienced Life Coach who focusses on confidence! I am also a trained Youth Mental Health First Aider and can work through a wide range of issues through teenage coaching. I use different techniques and give teenagers different tools they can use to help them through anxious times. Most importantly I provide them with a confidential space to be open and honest where they can openly discuss their concerns with me.
I am passionate about helping motivate young people so that they can fulfil their potential and make the most of the opportunities they might have. Coaching and working with teenagers is an absolute honour and I want to help as many as I can so that their teenage years are full of fun rather than worry.
I work with teenagers for a minimum of 5 sessions over a period of 3 months. These can be face-to-face here in my coaching studio in East Lothian, or over Zoom.
I am currently resident Life Coach at Fettes College, Edinburgh where all students have access to work with me during their time at school. www.fettes.com
The first step is for the client and I to meet (physically or virtually) for a free introductory chat to see if coaching is right for you and/or your child. During that session we will get to know each other and get a feel for what areas the coachee would like to work on.
Sessions are generally solution focused with a plan in mind, and as a result, coaching is time-limited, generally 5-10 sessions. Sessions are normally booked in blocks of five or ten. Each session is 1 hour for adults, 35-55 minutes for teenagers.
The session payment includes wraparound care, ie planning sessions in advance and following up with clients, supporting them to practice their tools and helping them ‘stick to the plan’.
Put simply, counselling and therapy is about looking at issues in the past in order to heal the present while coaching is about looking at the present to see where you can go in the future. As a Life Coach I will work with you to understand yourself better and therefore make the most of your personal strengths and attributes to get you to where you want to be.
While it’s very common to work with self-limiting beliefs, deep worries and self-esteem issues, coaching is not suitable for complex mental health issues. If I feel that any coachee could benefit from speaking to a therapist, I will work with and support them to access the appropriate help. If there are waiting lists, I can hold the space until a therapeutic space becomes available.
I am trained as a Mental Health First Aider and have a safeguarding procedure in place.
I am bound by ethical rules of confidentiality whether my client is an adult or adolescent. Coaching is a safe space for someone to share their worries, fears and aims, and it is most successful in a relationship based on trust and confidence.
For teenagers, with the teenage clients permission and without compromising the space, I can tell parents or the school about ‘homework’ that needs to be practised or and the general area under discussion. Meetings with stakeholders, ie parents or the school, or both, at certain points of the coaching journey are also very beneficial.
If a child or young person is considered to be at risk of significant harm from others or to themselves as a result of information disclosed, then disclosure will be made through the appropriate safeguarding process.
